Yes it’s very important to always check with the artist. Artist are in their living from their artwork. Most artists will be delighted that you want to utilize their work in someway. But you should always compensate them. Whether this is a flat fee or royalty is negotiable. Just don’t steal. Copyright infringement is a serious deal.
