BEST “ON-THE-GO” ART SUPPLIES FOR 2022
Like art, you learn so much in the process of doing. You can’t get better at painting or drawing without actually doing painting and drawing. You have to actually DRAW and paint in order to develop your skills. So to that effect I’ve made a list of my personal favorite art supplies for working on the go.
The Criteria for Testing Art Journals, Pens and Supplies:
I’ve tested dozens and dozens of art journals, pens and art supplies. These are my personal favorite fro working quickly and easily anywhere and any place. My criteria for on the go supplies is that they have to be quick and easy to use. That means no need for water to wash your brushes out. No jars or bowls to hold water or paint. No clean up necessary. The paper needs to be strong enough o hold the medium. No bleeding. And a little to no buckling. I also look for things that are archival. In other words I want paper and pens that will last. Colors that wont fade. And paper that wont yellow with time. You don’t want a piece of artwork that you love, to look like crap in just a couple fo years!
I also look for pens that go on smooth and work over just about any medium. Since I like to work on lots of different background and surfaces, and sometime create mixed media, I need pens that will work on paper, canvas and even over paint mat medium

First, you are going to need a bag to keep all your supplies in. Find -or purchase- a bag to keep all your supplies in. I use a cross body bag/purse I picked up from the Salvation Army for just a couple of dollars. (This way I don’t care if my pens leap or it gets paint on it!)

- Tip- I like to have an open pocket or two on the outside of the bag. this way I can just stick my pens right on the pocket with the pen cap over the edge. This allows me to see the colors and work quickly and easily. Just grab your bag and you can work anywhere anytime! Heck, even use it to take my supplies to different chairs or places around my house! This way I can still watch the kids and keep working, inside or out!

My favorite white, gold and silver pens are the Uni-ball Signo Broad Gel Pens. They will write on -or-over- just about anything including matt medium.

And my favorite pens that I love for creating detail work are the Sakura Pens in just about any color. There are literally 100s of colors available. You can buy them in packs or you can select individual colors at Michaels. Sakura is renowned for their Pigma Micron pens for artists. They come in a WIDE range of tip sizes, colors and even brush tips. Manga artists, love the grays. And fine artists the wold over love the fine tip sizes. They are archival too which means they will not fade. And the micro brushes do not bleed or smudge.

The 3D Glaze gel pens will write on and stick to just about any surface. And the soufflé pens are gorgeous on dark or black paper. I especially especially the neon and the moonlight gel pens on gray paper as they have a subtle sparkle. (PS. The Fluorescent colors of the Moonlight pens glow in black light!)
